Rest and Meal Breaks for Employees

June 17, 2020

In May 2019 the Government  made some changes on the rest and meal break entitlements and made it so that there were minimum entitlements rather than just ‘being fair and reasonable’.

The table below sets out the minimum rest and meal breaks an employee is entitled to, based on the length of an employee’s work period.  Employers must pay for the minimum rest breaks but don’t have to pay for minimum meal breaks.

There are exemptions in certain circumstances for essential services or employers that engage in New Zealand’s national security.
