Frequently Asked Accounting Questions

No - you can prepare your own financial statements and tax returns. However many Taupō business owners benefit from having a savvy accountant working alongside them - someone who can manage compliance save time and provide practical insights for growth.

It’s simplest to operate as a sole trader but you might prefer to form a company if you want to look more professional or plan to expand. Company structures can make it easier to sell shares or bring on investors. Partnerships and trading or family trusts are also options. It’s best to discuss your situation with one of our Taupō accountants so we can recommend the structure that fits your business goals.

Not if we’re your tax agent. As a dpa client you’ll receive an extension for filing until 31 March and an extension for payment until 7 April. That gives you more time to plan and pay with confidence.

If your business earns or will earn more than $60,000 in any 12-month period you need to register for GST. There are a few exceptions such as when you’re selling capital items while winding down or replacing assets. Our Taupō accounting team can help you determine when registration makes sense.

Sometimes yes sometimes no. If you’re a sole trader or shareholder-employee and your tax bill for your first year is under $50,000 you won’t pay provisional tax until the following year - but you still need to save for it. We’ll help you plan so there are no surprises.

Entertainment costs such as meals and drinks are usually 50% deductible if enjoyed off-site. Food and drink provided on your premises for staff are generally fully deductible. Travel-related accommodation and meals are fully deductible for business purposes but client entertainment while travelling is still 50%.

If you’re self-employed or a shareholder-employee you pay tax through the provisional tax system - three instalments during the year (28 August 15 January and 7 May) with a final wash-up at year-end. Our Taupō tax advisers can help you calculate and manage these payments.

You’ll need to record business use either with a 3-month logbook or by tracking business kilometres. You can claim expenses like fuel insurance repairs and depreciation in proportion to business use. If your company owns the vehicle fringe benefit tax (FBT) may apply.

Yes - ACC levies are based on your declared income and job type. We liaise directly with ACC on your behalf to make sure you’re in the right category and paying the correct rate.

If you purchased a rental after 27 March 2021 interest is no longer deductible. For earlier properties the deduction phases out gradually until April 2025. Property developers can still claim interest. Our Taupō accountants can clarify how these rules apply to you.

The Bright-Line Test determines whether you pay tax on profit from selling residential property. For properties purchased after 27 March 2021 the test period is 10 years. If it’s a new build it’s five years. Earlier purchases fall under shorter timeframes. We can help you calculate your exposure and exemptions.
